Built by Investors, for Investors

This mutual fund overlap checker was built to solve a real problem: most Indian investors own 3–7 mutual funds thinking they're diversified, when in reality 60–80% of their portfolio is concentrated in the same large-cap stocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

About mutual fund overlap, portfolio diversification, and this tool.

Mutual fund overlap refers to the percentage of common stocks held across two or more mutual funds in your portfolio. High overlap means your funds invest in many of the same companies, reducing actual diversification despite holding multiple funds. For example, if both your Large Cap Fund and Flexi Cap Fund hold Reliance, HDFC Bank, and Infosys in large proportions, your effective diversification is much lower than it appears.
This mutual fund overlap calculator identifies common stocks between two funds. For each common stock, it takes the minimum weight between the two funds and sums them up. The result is the overlap percentage. For example, if Fund A holds Reliance at 8% and Fund B holds Reliance at 5%, that contributes 5% to the overlap. This method prevents double-counting and gives a realistic measure of concentration.
Generally: 0–30% overlap is considered Low — excellent diversification. 30–60% is Moderate — acceptable but monitor closely. 60%+ is High — you are essentially holding the same portfolio twice, which defeats the purpose of having multiple funds. For Indian large-cap or index funds, some overlap is expected as they all tend to hold Nifty 50 or Sensex stocks. The key is to ensure your mid-cap, small-cap, and thematic funds have low overlap with your core large-cap holdings.
Yes. This portfolio overlap calculator works for any equity mutual fund — Large Cap, Mid Cap, Small Cap, Flexi Cap, Multi Cap, ELSS, Sector Funds, Thematic Funds, and Index Funds. You just need to enter the fund's holdings manually from the latest factsheet. It is most useful for equity funds as debt funds have very different holdings.
You can find the latest holdings (portfolio disclosure) for any Indian mutual fund on: the fund house's official website (e.g., HDFC AMC, SBI MF), AMFI India (amfiindia.com), Value Research Online (valueresearchonline.com), Morningstar India (morningstar.in), or Moneycontrol. Funds are required by SEBI to disclose their top 10 holdings every month. For best results, use data that is less than 30 days old.
Yes, this tool is 100% free. There is no subscription, no premium tier, no registration, and no hidden fees. It is a gift to the Indian investor community. The tool runs entirely in your browser — no servers, no databases, no tracking. You can bookmark it and use it offline as well.

This mutual fund overlap calculator is designed to help Indian retail investors understand how much their mutual fund portfolio is truly diversified.
